Dangers of Addiction to Pornography

Addiction to Pornography

Addiction to Pornography

The prevalence of visual pornography in many corners of our society is alarming. There is really not much of a difference in the heightened sexual imagery of typical pornography and the brief emotional satisfaction felt in a romance movie.

Pornography sabotages adults, children, families, and society. Among adolescents, pornography hinders the development of a healthy sexuality, and among adults, it distorts sexual behaviors and social realities. In families, pornography leads to marital dissatisfaction, separation, and divorce. Society at large is not immune to the effect of pornography.

Effect on Marriage

Viewers of pornography give increased importance to sexual relations without emotional involvement, and consequently, wives experience decreased intimacy from their husbands.

Wives begin to feel unattractive or sexually inadequate and may become depressed when they realize their husbands view pornography.

In an Article titled “the effect of pornography on Individual, Marriage, Family and Community,” the author   Patrick F. Fagan, Ph.D. explained that in a study  on the effects of “cybersex”—a form of sexually explicit interaction between two on the Internet—researchers found that more than half of those engaged in “cybersex” had lost interest in sexual intercourse, while one-third of their had lost interest as well, while in one-fifth of the couples both husband and wife or both partners had a significantly decreased interest in sexual intercourse. Stated differently, this study showed that only one-third of couples maintained an interest in sexual relations with one another when one partner was engaged in “cybersex.”

So as a result, the institution of marriage is seen as sexually confining by pornography viewers and leads to a diminished belief in the importance of marital faithfulness.

Effect on Individual

Repeated use of pornography produces boredom and sexual dissatisfaction among female and male viewers. It leads the viewer to consider “recreational sexual engagements” as , and changes the viewer to being very accepting of sexual permissiveness.

Pornography presents sexual access as a recreational events that amounts to innocent fun with inconsequential effects on emotions, perceptions, and distorted perceptions of social reality. These distortions result in an acceptance of that sexual relationships are recreational in nature and men are generally sexually driven.

Effect on the Society

Pornography encourages the idea that the degradation of women is acceptable. Since males use pornography much more frequently than females, exposure to sexual material from the Internet, magazines and television is associated with stronger convictions that women are sex objects. Men thus exposed are more likely to describe women in open sexual terms, rather than by other personal attributes.  Women who view pornography regularly engage in a form of self-degradation: they develop a negative body image about themselves because they do not measure up to the depictions in the pornographic materials.

 Effect on Adolescent

Pornography viewing among teenagers disorients them during that developmental phase when they have to learn how to handle their sexuality and when they are most vulnerable to uncertainty about their sexual beliefs and moral values. Their attitudes toward their own and others sexuality changes and their sexual expectations and behaviour are disoriented. Exposure to pornographic sexual content can be a significant factor in teenage pregnancy.

Diseases and Unwanted Pregnancies

Pornography viewers have a higher likelihood of contracting a sexually transmitted disease or having an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Pornography’s frequent depiction of intercourse without condom is an invitation for the prolonged viewer to contract a sexually transmitted disease, to have a child out of wedlock and to have multiple sex partners.

Pornography is indeed very dangerous. It is very depressing and can lead to mental health issues and possibly suicidal thoughts as one realize that one can’t get this fantasy in the real world. Relationships are not only threatened by competing online images, but become threatened by real life affairs inspired by online fantasies.
